Cowden Valley
Farm: “Giving Up’s the Easy Part” Cowden Valley Farm – or The George Cowden Farm as it is known to others in the area – is
located a few miles north of Washington, Pa, between Hickory and
Cecil at the foot of Morgan Hill. A road runs through it, dividing
the cow barns from the house and many of the pastures and fields.
A diary farm running 26 head of
Holsteins, the land has been in the family since 1857, though nipping at
the edges on several fronts now are new subdivisions. The subtitle for the series comes
from the Cowden who currently works the farm – said originally to
encourage me in my photography, though there’s no doubt he speaks from
his own experience.
The photographs are approximately 10”
x 10” carbon-pigment images, printed on 13” x 17” archival Somerset
Velvet unenhanced watercolor paper. The series is on-going, beginning in
the Spring of 2005, and will continue over the seasons for several years.
With special thanks to Chip, JoAnn and
Adam.
